Robert Francis Prevost, elected new Pope: Leo XIV

The phrase “your sadness will turn to joy” is a promise found in the gospel of John (John 16:20-22). It means that, despite the difficulties and sorrows that may be faced, there will come a time when sadness will give way to joy and happiness. The election of Pope Leo XIV puts an end to a period of interim status and, in a certain way, orphanhood. The Cardinal Fathers, supporting the action of the Holy Spirit, have carried out the election, which has been accepted by the interested party, who from this very moment has become the Successor of Peter, at the head of the Universal Church. And this is the reason for our immense joy. From now on we will hear his name echoed in the Eucharistic prayer, thus expressing the full communion of the Church of Menorca with the Successor of Peter, Bishop of Rome and Head of the Universal Church. As I told you in a previous writing, Catholics can be proud of the last Popes we have had, some of whom have already been raised to the altars. Pope Leo XIV now joins this succession of exemplary pastors, who will be able to have them as intercessors and references in his recently begun ministry. Cardinal Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, in the homily at the mass that was celebrated before the Conclave asked: “May the Pope be elected that the Church and humanity need at this difficult and complex moment in history.” We are sure that the election of the new Pope Leo XIV obeys this need. Let us pray that Pope Leo XIV, endowed with eminent human and spiritual qualities, with excellent preparation and with a life of selfless service and dedication to the Church, will give himself sincerely and tirelessly to the new mission entrusted to him as Pastor of the Universal Church.
